For the fifth straight year, Christensen Law will continue its effort to combat drunk driving during the holidays by reimbursing people who choose taxis or rideshares after drinking on Thanksgiving Eve.

The Southfield personal injury law firm debuted its Safe Ride Home Program in 2015. Statistics show that the night before Thanksgiving, also called “Blackout Wednesday,” is one of the most dangerous driving nights of the year.

“For years, the lawyers at Christensen Law have seen the heartache that drunk drivers cause families throughout the community,” says attorney David Christensen, the firm’s founder. “If paying for just one cab saves a life this year, it will be worth it.”

Driving Down the Number of Intoxicated Motorists

Thanksgiving is one of the deadliest holidays in terms of road traffic accidents in Michigan. In 2018, there were 11 fatalities in the state during the long Thanksgiving weekend (6 p.m. Thanksgiving Eve through midnight the following Sunday). Of the 11 fatalities, four involved alcohol, with three killing the driver, according to the Michigan State Police.

Nationwide, more than one out of every three traffic fatalities during the 2017 Thanksgiving holiday period involved an alcohol-impaired driver, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The Safe Ride Home program was developed by Christensen Law to encourage motorists to make a better choice.

“Raising awareness about drunk driving is important, and it’s even better if you can provide a solution,” says Christensen.

Since its launch in 2015, it has paid for over 2,000 rides home for intoxicated drivers — a fantastic result that will continue to benefit the Michigan community for years to come.

How Safe Ride Home Works

If you’ve had too much to drink on the night of Thanksgiving Eve, don’t risk the health and safety of yourself and those around you by driving home buzzed. Instead, call a licensed taxi service or rideshare to take you from the bar to your home. Pay for the ride and get a receipt. The next day, visit https://www.davidchristensenlaw.com/safe-ride-home/ to fill out an online form for reimbursement of up to $25.

To take advantage of this program, you must at least 21 and hold a valid driver’s license. Your one-way ride home must also be within Wayne, Macomb, Washtenaw, Oakland, Bay, Kent, or Genesee counties. This program runs between 4pm on Wednesday November 25th to 4am on Thursday, November 26th.

The deadline to submit receipts is by midnight on Saturday, Nov. 28, 2020.
